Last week, I braved the craziness of Black Friday shopping. Normally I wake up at 5am and head out to the stores, careful to not wake my sleeping family. But this year, my children were staying at their dad’s apartment, so I had the whole night ‘off’. And with nothing else to do and two adventurous friends to entice me out, I pull a shopping all-nighter.
My friends and I had a blast. We survived the midnight madness at Toys R Us and found some great deals at the Disney store. I kept a smile on my face through the first four hours of nonstop crowds and frustrated shoppers (seriously, if you aren’t having fun, then why stress yourself out?). But then we hit… the men’s department of a major department chain.
Now, normally, such things wouldn’t bother me. But completely exhausted, I didn’t have my walls up to protect me. And when I saw a whole wing of clothes that my ex would’ve loved and at great deals, I hit my own wall. Self-pitying thoughts crawled into my head and my heart felt heavy. It hurt.
